Underleaf

Fri 4:00 pm

A bit Folked up, a little Funked up, with a hint of Indie, a pinch of Americana, and a touch of the Blues, Underleaf is an exhilarating, genre-defying, harmony-driven Rock band from the knolls of Emmet County, Michigan…..
Carefully cultivated under the canopy of trees that forest Northwest Michigan, Underleaf beckons the listener with a welcoming, relaxed vibe like a cool, shady tree, offering a respite from the hectic pace of modern life. Taking root in 2020, with this lineup having come together in late 2022, featuring original music written predominantly by Jeff & Rob, all four members are skilled at songcraft and arrangement, making for a varied, captivating live music experience. Jeff, whose songwriting is most often quick-paced and laced with inspiration, draws from varying musical styles to deliver each song’s message, often one of hope and a reminder of what humankind can achieve collaboratively. Rob, whose songwriting is lush, pensive and steep with Blues, Southern Rock, and Americana influences, is adamant about sharing his artistic gifts to inspire positive change for both humanity and the planet. Behind the storytellers up front are Rick on drums, who started his musical career as a keyboardist, and Matt on bass, who started his musical career as a drummer, together laying down the comfortable, in-the-pocket heartbeat of Underleaf, while bringing a melodic approach to each of their instruments. The chemistry within this band is undeniably tangible, making for an easy-going yet fun experience. Given the decades of combined musical experience, behind Underleaf are a long list of prior and current projects, some of the more prominent being Faces On Mars, One Ton Trolley, The Moon Howlers, and The Atwood Green Band. Ahead for Underleaf in 2025, a return to our favorite venues and festivals, debuts at new and exciting locales, and release of our upcoming EP!

The Claudettes

Fri 8:00 pm

Six albums into their lauded career, the Claudettes (of Chicago) continue to put a fascinating new spin on American roots music…..
Blues and R&B are laced with punk spirit and film-noir moods to create the band’s singular “garage cabaret” sound. The Claudettes have earned worldwide acclaim with their recordings and concerts that are equal parts heart, musicianship and theatrical flair. Force-of-nature vocalist Rachel Williams (who dominates the stage like a glam-rock rebirth of Annie Lennox and renowned pianist/songwriter Johnny Iguana join the positively heroic rhythm section of Zach Verdoorn (bass, guitar, vocals) and Michael Caskey (drums). Outside the Claudettes, Iguana has toured with Junior Wells and Otis Rush, played on many Grammy-nominated albums and recorded with Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Derek Trucks, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Johnny Winter and more. Johnny is also composer of the score for the Emmy-winning smash FX/Hulu series “The Bear.” “Chicago’s original recipe band…The Claudettes’ sonic playing field is the blues and everything after, all tastefully and artfully blended together….Perhaps the band’s greatest super power: songwriting.”—NPR Music “A skewed cabaret band of blues, jazz and rockabilly…a sensibility that feels equal parts James Dean and David Lynch.”—Minneapolis Star-Tribune “Holy Mackerel…I hear so many levels of what I consider amazing creativity…I hear touches of Jerry Lee Lewis at his most manic…of cinema…of multiple genres wrapping around one another…These guys are the B-movies of the music world—maybe not understood now, but in the future, the kings and queens of the universe!”—Frank Gutch Jr., No Depression “The Claudettes Go Out! shows the band’s mastery of every era of American music, from the roots of the blues to today’s modern pop….the Claudettes pen standards for a new generation.”—J. Laura and producer-songwriter George Friend have created a unique style, winning numerous Detroit Music Awards, and heavily touring the U.S. Canada and Europe for the last eight years. Laura Rain’s voice soars as she weaves her own path through a classic, but thoroughly modern and funky sound, reimagining the r&b, gospel, and soul that the city made famous. Their smooth retro soul single “Closer to the Win” received over 250,000 views on social media, with the single climbing the UK Soul chart and receiving accolades for its authentic feel and heartfelt vocal delivery. Recently, Laura Rain and the Caesars signed a deal with UK based LRK Records, with a debut single release of “Closer to the Win” and “If I Can’t Have You” on a vinyl 45, and culminating with their FIFTH full length album “Rise Again”, in 2022. Whorled

Sat 11:30 pm

World Music — hefty doses of celtic, gypsy jazz, classical and often a mash-up of these styles
“The world folk band stole the stage with a set that was less of a performance and more of an experience. Many of its songs weaved through various genres — starting as an Irish highland tune, then transitioning to a traditional Japanese song and ending with a bluegrass swing.” -localspins.com, John Sinkevics Thom Jayne Over the years, Thom has been inspired by influences ranging from Tony Rice to Flamenco to Jethro Tull to Brazilian folk music. His eclectic style of guitar also draws from African influences where he has worked for 35 years as a Professor of Agricultural Economics at Michigan State University. Thom has been part of Michigan’s music scene since the Lansing-based “Thom Jayne and the Nomads” emerged in the early 2000s with a hard-to-categorize blend of African, Celtic, jazz, and Latin influences. His first two releases, The Forgotten Conquest and Road Trip, both won WYCE Jammie Awards for best local World Beat CD of the year. His guitar features on several tracks by the Zambian singer Ballard Zulu. In addition to playing in Whorled, he is the guitarist in the traditional Celtic band Trillium. When not playing or listening to music, Thom enjoys communing with Spirit and nature, spending time with family and friends, and petting dogs. Keala Venema Keala is a multi-instrumentalist who plays fiddle, guitar, tin whistle and Bodhran, the Irish drum. She has grown up playing in Irish and Bluegrass sessions for years and grew up being in bands such as Circling Shannon or The Barley Saints. She is a graduate from the Michigan Academy of Folk Music and now aspires to build community around the fiddle. She is the lead fiddle instructor at Michigan Academy of Folk Music as well as at Triumph Music Academy. In addition to her private teaching work, she has assisted or led fiddle string clinics for Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Great Lakes Music Camp Youth Academy, or with local youth orchestras. Her playing experiences draw from the opportunity to jam and attend fiddle camps across the country with Grammy award winning or nominated artists such as Jeremy Kittel, Darol Anger, David Greely and John Reischman, and now is a fiddle force in the Grand Rapids music scene playing music with jazz fusion band Candid Antics or occasionally filling in for folk acts Roosevelt Diggs, Hawks and Owls String Band, or Ben Traverse. In addition to music, Keala enjoys painting, making a good cappuccino and hanging out with her two parrots. Mariko Venema Mariko was classically trained on the piano since the age of five, but later in life was always drawn toward alternative forms of music. She began playing the accordion in late 2017 and delved into genres such as Irish, Old Time, Gypsy Jazz along with Brazilian, French and Italian traditional accordion styles. In her pursuit to increase her ability playing the accordion, Mariko’s passion led her to study under world class teachers Jacques Mornet and Nathalie Boucheix in both New Orleans and St-Sauves d’Auvergne, France. She has also studied under New Jersey based teacher Dallas Vietty who is one to the premiere Jazz accordionists in the nation. Mariko’s desire is to revive interest in the accordion by brand new forms of expressing her instrument. She also teaches piano and accordion in the Grand Rapids area to share her joy of music to the next generation.
